AWS D1.1/D1.1M — Structural Welding Code: Steel

AWS D1.1/D1.1M — Structural Welding Code: Steel

Record: materials-std-006 (Materials, flagship standard). Issuing body: American Welding Society (AWS).

1. What it is, who issues and enforces it

AWS D1.1 is the US structural-steel welding code — the rules for welding steel structures (buildings, bridges, industrial structures, equipment supports). Issuer: the American Welding Society. It becomes binding through building codes (the IBC references AWS D1.1), owner specifications, and contract documents; enforcement runs through the Engineer of Record, jurisdictional building officials, and third-party inspection agencies. It is the single most-cited welding standard in North American construction and the backbone of the CWI examination.

2. Scope

Covers welding of carbon and low-alloy steels (minimum specified yield ≤ 100 ksi) in structural applications: design of welded connections (Chapters 2–4), prequalification of WPSs, qualification of procedures and personnel, fabrication, inspection, and stud welding. Key structural concepts:

  • Prequalified WPSs (Chapter 5). Welding procedure specifications using listed processes, base metals, filler metals, joint details, and parameters are "prequalified" — usable without procedure qualification testing. Step outside the prequalification limits and a PQR (procedure qualification record) with mechanical testing is required.
  • Statically vs. cyclically loaded structures. Different design and inspection rules — cyclically loaded (fatigue-critical: bridges, crane girders) structures face tougher joint-detail, stress-range, and inspection requirements.
  • Tubular structures (Chapter 9) — specialized rules for tubular joints common in offshore-adjacent and industrial structures.

3. Key requirements in plain technical language

  1. WPS/PQR discipline. Every production weld must be made to a written WPS; non-prequalified WPSs require PQR testing (tension, bend, macroetch, and for some cases Charpy). Essential variables are defined — changing one requalifies the procedure.
  2. Welder qualification (Chapter 6). Welders qualified by position, process, and joint type via test assemblies; qualification is maintained by continuity (welding with the process at least every 6 months) — lapsed continuity disqualifies.
  3. Inspection (Chapter 8). Visual inspection of every weld by qualified inspectors; NDT (RT/UT) percentages for cyclically loaded structures and tension butt joints; acceptance criteria tables (cracks never acceptable; porosity/undercut limits by loading class).
  4. Fabrication tolerances and workmanship. Fit-up, alignment, backing, preheat/interpass temperature control (Table 5.8 preheat by steel group and thickness), and distortion control.
  5. Stud welding (Chapter 7). Shear-connector and stud-welding qualification, testing (bend tests), and production control.

4. Penalties and consequences

D1.1 is not itself a fining authority. Consequences flow through building-code enforcement (stop-work orders, refusal of occupancy), contract remedies (rework at the fabricator's cost — weld rejection rates drive project economics), and liability: a structural weld failure traced to non-D1.1 practice is the textbook negligence case, implicating the fabricator, the inspection agency, and the Engineer of Record. Falsified inspection records draw fraud prosecution.

5. Version and live changes (checked 2026-09-30)

  • AWS D1.1 is on a five-year cycle; D1.1:2020 was the recent edition, with the next edition (2025) published/in adoption during this period. Flag: verify which edition the IBC edition adopted by your jurisdiction references — building officials enforce the referenced edition, not the newest one.
  • Recent cycles have addressed high-strength steels, updated UT acceptance criteria, and clarified cyclically-loaded provisions.
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) (Materials flagship) — the credential that directly tests D1.1; CWIs are the code's designated qualified inspectors.
  • AWS Senior CWI (SCWI) — supervisory/inspection-management level over D1.1 work.
  • ASNT NDT Level II/III — the RT/UT personnel performing Chapter 8 NDT.
  • PE (Structural/Metallurgical) — Engineer-of-Record responsibility for welded connection design.

7. Honest flags

  • Prequalification is a privilege with boundaries — the most common fabricator error is assuming a WPS is prequalified when one variable (e.g., a non-listed filler metal or a joint detail deviation) voids it.
  • D1.1 does not cover pressure vessels (BPVC Section VIII/IX) or pipelines (API 1104) — using D1.1 acceptance criteria on pressure-boundary welds is a scoping error.

Record: materials-std-006.
